For over 400 years Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand before being almost completely destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. At its height it was the biggest city in the world. Having been abandoned, and the capital moved to Bangkok, what’s left is architecturally and historically stunning.
It’s also less than 90 minutes by train from Bangkok, so makes for a fantastic day trip to escape the craziness of city life.
