If you’re travelling from Thailand to Laos, taking the slow boat down the Mekong River is a unique and popular tourist route. The boat travels through Laos from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang and takes two days with an overnight stop in the small town of Pakbeng.

The route is perfect if you’re leaving Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand and want to enter Laos without flying. The journey is definitely an interesting experience and one of the most memorable things you can do in South East Asia. This is a step-by-step guide to planning and taking the slow boat to Luang Prabang including costs and timings.
