Benidorm History
The city of Benidorm has a long and rich history dating back to the Bronze Age when it was inhabited by the Iberian tribe known as the “Ultraburs.” The Romans invaded in 218 BC and built a settlement there, which they called “Burriana,” meaning “city on the hill.” They first came to Spain in 206 BC when they invaded the Iberian Peninsula from the south. After the fall of Rome, control of the region passed through numerous hands before finally being seized by the Moors in 712 AD. It wasn’t until 1492 that Christian forces led by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella recaptured Benidorm and drove out the Moorish occupiers.
In more recent times, Benidorm saw an influx of British tourists in the 1950s who were looking for an affordable beach holiday destination. Today, Benidorm is a popular tourist destination in Spain and the second-largest city on Spain’s eastern coast.
