How fit do you need to be to hike in the Himalayas?
It’s hard to put a figure on it exactly as some people can be both overweight and fit and likewise, athletic-looking but not really. A rough guide can be BMI.
The ideal BMI (Body Mass Index) during the Himalayan treks should be 18.5 to 24.9 for all the trekkers. But if your BMI is below 18.5 then it falls under the underweight range and if your BMI is between 25.0 and 29.9 then it comes under the overweight range.
If you fall under the underweight range then you are advised to take up high protein diets. You can also have mass gainers so that you can meet a normal BMI. If you are in the overweight range then it is recommended for you that you exercise and jog daily and check on your diet so that you can meet the ideal BMI.
Trekkers with ideal BMI are apt for treks. Overweight and underweight ranged trekkers can find it very difficult due to loss of energy, altitude sickness, fatigue and other complications too. So, check on your BMI, consult a doctor if it’s abnormal and then only venture on these adventurous sports.
